Women And Girls Empowerment 

The WAGE Project Overview

Bringing women into the mainstream of economy is critical to empowering women. The Women And Girls Empowerment/WAGE project aims to empower women by providing them Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET). The skills that the women will gain through the WAGE project will increase their employment opportunities, which will develop and empower them as they contribute to the local and national economies.

WAGE Project Objective

To create a training program for women and girls that will:

• Provide certified skills in the field of tailoring and textiles

• Develop a group of independent, empowered, and self-sustained women and girls

WAGE Project Rationale

• Women in developing countries like Liberia have limited access to services and tools for personal and professional development.

• A lack of job skills hinders individual and collective productivity and economic growth.

• Women in Liberia have unequal opportunities accessing skill-building resources.

• There remains a low number of women in technical and vocational education and training.

Rationale for Selecting Liberia, West Africa for the Project

 

  • West Point is a low income community near the city of Monrovia. This peninsula community is one of the most densely populated communities within the city of Monrovia with a population of over 75,000 residents.

  • The community of West Point reflects the hardship of the national post-war seaside community range from overpopulation to inadequate sanitation to environmental degradation which has caused coastal erosion conditions and economic crisis with problems ranging from high illiteracy and unemployment rates to poor living conditions.

  • Some problems specific to this seaside community range from overpopulation to inadequate
    sanitation to environmental degradation which has caused coastal erosion.
